Heya, 🇺🇦
I don’t normally pray but my heart sank when I saw the address of the mockup I had just purchased: Kyiv, Ukraine, I used the download time for a moment of silence. Just hours earlier Putin had done the unimaginable when Russia launched an invasion on Ukraine, now the largest conventional warfare operation in Europe since World War II.
Crazy to think I’d be writing about a war in 2022 in a substack newsletter about ads, but it's 1) all-consuming and 2) will be detrimental to our creative community ahead.
A number of global agencies have swiftly and to their best efforts made plans to help protect their UA teammates including setting up medical care funds, advancing financial assistance, and planning relocations. The agencies with the largest Ukrainian staff are Publicis, WPP and Havas.
If you are like me and carrying guilt for being so helpless here are some resources to support Ukraine right now:
Flags of Support – Lance Vining, SVP, Creative Director, BBDO NY, redesigned country flags with the Ukrainian flag so you can show solidarity online.
Kyiv Independent – Donate to English-language journalists covering the war in Ukraine.
Ukrainian Fundraiser T-Shirt – The Ukrainian co-founder of Pleasures, an LA-based streetwear brand, is selling a vibey shirt to wear your support. 100% of the proceeds are going to UNICEF.
Care International – Non-governmental org raising $ for humanitarian assistance in Ukraine (food, water, hygiene products, & medical)
Voices of Children – Ukrainian org aiming to provide psychological & psychosocial support to children affected by war.
International Medical Corps – Global nonprofit providing medical services in affected areas of invasion.
UN Refugee Agency – Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are matching $1-for-$1 up to $1M to help displaced Ukrainians.
