Heya, 🍺
The Bud Light boycott explained:
If you only have 6s to read: Bud Light sent a six-pack of beers to the TikTok famous trans influencer, Dylan Mulvaney, and all hell broke loose.
Dylan rose to fame on TikTok through her “365 Days of Girlhood '' series, where she vulnerably shared her experience transitioning. I follow her content religiously because she reminds me of the fun parts of growing into a woman. Her content is seriously the most wholesome thing on the internet. With around 10M TikTok followers and millions more across her other channels, Mulvaney has become a household name for Gen Z. Naturally, Bud Light tapped her.
What was supposed to be an innocent influencer sweepstakes bit turned into a total nightmare.
Trans issues are currently front and center in America’s culture war. Just this year there have been 528 proposed anti-trans bills, with 50 passing. Excussseee me, multi-hundos? To put it in perspective, in 2022 we saw 26 bills pass out of 174 bills. These bills are targeting children, drag, driver’s licenses, sports, and health care. And unfortunately they’ve gone mainstream.
Cue: Kid Rock shooting up Bud Light with an AR-15. Disgusting.
Then a bunch of wack dudes tried and failed to start a #boycottbudlight movement by dumping out their Bud Light beers. I say failed because many switched to Miller or Coors, who are huge supporters of LGBTQA+ rights.
The response we all wish we got: “lol CRYBABIES,” a fake Bud Light billboard from comedian Jamison Lightfoot that went viral.
Long story short, boycotts tend to damage a company’s reputation more than they do the bottom line. Anheuser-Busch InBev is a $100 billion company. They’ll ultimately be fine.
With LGBTQA+ Pride on the horizon, I hope this BS didn’t scare brands from participating. This community needs you more than ever. Double down on those media dollars and show up the right way!
