👋 Heya,
I may be biased because I’m a California native, but Governor Gavin Newsom is my hero.
In the – I can’t believe I’m about to say this – post-Roe era, Newsom seems to be the only politician saying what we’re all thinking to sitting Republicans – fuck you!
On September 15, as part of his re-election campaign, Newsom released a series of billboards in six states that ban abortions, directing women to a newly-launched website, abortion.ca.gov, and lets them easily know how and where to get an abortion in California – whether or not they live in the state.
But that was not the only G moment from Newsom. To let Californians know what he was up to -- they wouldn’t see those out-of-town spots, he called out every anti-abortion politician by tagging them on Twitter. This is the kind of leadership energy we need going into the midterms!
Newsom isn’t just all talk. He’s also been fighting hard on the ground to keep abortion safe in California. As of September 28, he’s signed 13 abortion protection and reproductive health bills that:
Strengthened privacy protections by blocking out-of-state subpoenas
Banned police from prosecuting abortions that take place in California including the enforcement of out-of-state court judgments against doctors and volunteers
Created special funding for low-income women needing abortions regardless if they are residents
Pushed forward Proposition 1, a ballot measure that would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.
Gov. Gavin Newsom, you rule.
🚨 Shout out: The Land of Random
My favorite Monday newsletter that helps me rediscover the magic of the internet. Land of Random brings me so much joy and so much weirdness. It’s where I learned about an $800 Sushi Box as well as TikTok’s rising music genre Phonk that I now play on repeat before big meetings.
🧨 Special Recommendation: The End Up
THE END UP is a scripted podcast about two best friends living in a tilted near-future where terminal cancer patients can end their life with a weeklong Bootcamp … NO SPOILERS … This 7 part series was the only thing I was looking forward to this entire month. It's funny, dark, and is an endearing story about two male best friends loving each other until the end. On Spotify, Apple, or wherever you get your podcasts.
