Welcome to this month’s advertising catch-up with Ketchup, a once-a-month roundup of creative that got me excited. If you like this type of thing, subscribe!
Heya! 💥
The worst best thing of the month: unhinged political ads.
Meet Ken Russell, a politician who is running for Florida's 27th District in the US Congress against Maria Salazar. If you don’t live in Florida, that might not mean much, but to Russell’s 400k TikTok followers (@kenforflorida), he’s one of the few Democrats who understands how to talk to the masses in 2022.
Taking a page out of AOC’s playbook, Russell quickly became famous on TikTok for laying down the law with a tinge of humor. Take, for example, his first video. He holds local polluters accountable for dumping trash off their yachts by perfectly blending his Mr. Serious political face with TikTok's 2020 viral sound "Oh No" by Kreepa. Never did I care more about rich people trashing a harbor!
His virality was instant; a likable internet dad figure who has TikTok transitions nailed down. So much so that he was able to raise $1M in donations with a 15s video trying to take down Florida senator Marco Rubio.
What is the unhinged part? VOTE - an INSANE TikTok stitch (where your TikTok is combined with someone else's) of Russell transitioning with a girl's seductive post and telling people to make sure they're registered to vote.
The internet is calling it the "best political ad ever." I’ve watched it a million times, so I agree.
Russell is putting the fun back into politics, and his viral stardom is proving how important it is to appeal to a generation of people who for the most part feel neglected by their politicians.
The politicians who get it, get it, and Russell truly gets it.
