Heya! 🎃
This month I’m dedicating this intro to David Kennedy, an advertising legend who died in October and whose agency put Nike on the map, setting the gold standard for advertising.
Wieden+Kennedy, styled as W+K, was born in 1982 when David Kennedy and Dan Wieden united together to balk at traditional agency norms and created a “temple of outrageousness” in Portland, Oregon. They grew famous for their extraordinary “Just Do It,” “Bo Knows,” and “Mars and Mike” Nike campaigns, and made countless headlines for Subaru, Travel Oregon, Microsoft, EA, Old Spice, Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Heinz, and many more.
Over the past month, creatives have paid homage to Kennedy’s greatness, referencing his Santa Kennedy magic, David Bowie-like energy, denim-on-denim fits (one time he was mistaken for a janitor), and his mischievous and loving soul.
“It is a cliche to say that someone gave advertising a conscience, even a soul. That they put what we do in a wider context. That they demanded we make things that were welcome, thoughtful, even life-changing. That would be a cliche. Unless you said it about David Kennedy. We will miss him.” – GS&P
Long live the legacy of K+W.
